Trump Opens Dyed Diesel to Highways as Crude Slides

Oil pulled back in premarket trade as Washington moved to ease a record diesel price spike ahead of November’s midterms.

Market Snapshot

All figures are indicative premarket levels as of this morning, October 6.

The Dow added around 0.18 percent to 51,267.90 and the S&P 500 gained roughly 0.66 percent to 7,773.95, while the Nasdaq led with a gain of about 1.05 percent to 27,477.31.

Valero slipped around 0.39 percent to about $417.70 even as today’s diesel policy news broke in its favor.

Constellation Energy jumped roughly 7.87 percent to around $288.69 on a new nuclear power deal with Google, and Option Care Health soared about 23.80 percent to around $28.94 on reports of a pending buyout.

Main Story

President Trump signed an executive order easing the country’s diesel crunch, and the move rippled straight into energy markets.

  • The national average diesel price topped $6 a gallon in September for the first time ever, with some truck stops charging above $8, and Trump’s order lets truckers and farmers use tax-exempt red-dyed diesel on highways while deferring the federal fuel tax through year-end.
  • The administration frames the move as relief for truckers and farmers hit by supply disruptions tied to the Ukraine and Iran conflicts, with the White House estimating savings of more than $100 per fill-up, while the G7 separately agreed to release 100 million barrels of diesel and crude from emergency reserves.
  • What the market may be missing is that this is a tax deferral, not a supply fix, and cheaper highway access to dyed diesel could pull down reserves just as refiners head into the winter heating season.

Chart of the Day

Valero has climbed steadily since early September as refiners captured a widening diesel crack spread, touching a fresh 52-week high around $421.98 within the past few sessions.

The stock is now trading around $417.70 in premarket action, sitting comfortably above its 50-day moving average near $396.03.

Whether that cushion holds likely depends on how quickly today’s policy relief filters through to the physical diesel market.
